❯ The Imagined Opera "Jūratė" by M. K. Čiurlionis – A Dream Brought to Life

M. K. Čiurlionis dreamed of composing the first Lithuanian opera, and as early as 1906, he wrote about his determination to create it. "Jūratė," based on Lithuanian mythology and a libretto by Sofija Kymantaitė, was a work he passionately developed—from scenic sketches to melodic ideas—yet the opera remained unfinished.

Now, through Čiurlionis’ creative legacy, letters, and sketches, combined with modern technology, this imagined opera is coming to life. Artificial intelligence serves as a creative inspiration, generating musical material that live composers shape into a new musical universe while preserving Čiurlionis' artistic spirit.

The premiere of "Jūratė" will take place in October 2025 as part of the New Opera Action (NOA) festival. As one of the key events of Čiurlionis’ 150th-anniversary program, the opera will later expand onto both national and international stages.
