In the history of Lithuanian art, M. K. Čiurlionis undoubtedly holds a special place and is often referred to as a genius. However, his work is mostly perceived as a historical treasure, gradually distancing itself from contemporary discourse. “This project by the Lithuanian Artists’ Association aims to revitalize M. K. Čiurlionis’ legacy and bring it back into the field of contemporary art,” state the project organizers.

The project seeks to rethink the format of the plein-air workshop in the context of today. “Traditionally, plein-air painting meant working outdoors – painting, drawing, or creating watercolors while observing nature directly. Today, as the concept and objectives of art have evolved, artists no longer aim to depict nature as precisely as possible. The plein-air format takes on a new meaning – it becomes a way for the artist to be in unity with nature, to experience or explore it, to form new connections and ideas, and to address relevant issues through artistic means,” the organizers emphasize.

Nature plays a crucial role in Čiurlionis’ art, fitting into his cosmogonic structures where natural imagery weaves together macro- and micro-level narratives. His works are rich in forest and sea motifs, which form the basis of many of his most famous paintings, including Serenity, Summer Sonata, Raigardas, The Prince’s Journey, and the series Winter, Spring, Summer, among others.

“As the Earth and humanity face the challenges of climate change and species extinction, the need to dissolve the division between humans and nature becomes more urgent. We must seek new paths of harmony and coexistence. The need to reflect on the challenges of the Anthropocene is more pressing than ever, and the project’s relevance lies in its aim to explore a deeper relationship between humans and nature in a world shaped by technology and consumerism,” the organizers stress.

The exhibition curated by Aistė Kisarauskaitė, to be held at the Palanga Resort Museum, will showcase artworks created during the residency. These works will reflect and highlight Čiurlionis’ nature-centered thinking and sensitivity through the lens of contemporary art. Participating artists and researchers will develop narratives about nature and the seashore, revealing the complex relationship between humans and the natural world – a relationship that helps us understand ourselves, our surroundings, and our social ties, while also pointing to new ways of coexisting with nature in the age of technology.

The exhibition opening concert will feature arrangements of M. K. Čiurlionis’ music for piano and will be accompanied by a conference.
