Marking the 150th anniversary of M. K. Čiurlionis’ birth, the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO invites you to take a deeper look into the worldview and creative symbolism of this exceptional artist.

An open online lecture will take place on April 4 at 2:00 PM (EET), delivered by Professor Gintautas Mažeikis.

The speaker introduces the lecture as follows:

“I will speak about Čiurlionis’ interest in the theosophical movement in Poland and Russia: what the theosophical current means, how it differs from Hermeticism and Rosicrucianism. To what extent did these movements influence visual, musical, and literary symbolism, as well as Čiurlionis’ synesthetic thinking? How does synesthetic symbolic thought function, and why are symbolic forms and formulas so important in this context?

Finally, what does this symbolism mean in relation to the painting series ‘Sonata of the Serpent’—how were these works interpreted by V. Daujotytė and A. Šliogeris, and what could I add that they may not have addressed? Why is this relevant not only to Lithuanian, but also to the broader international heritage of symbolism?”

The event will begin with an opening address by Miglė Mašanauskienė, Secretary-General of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO.
