The Lithuanian painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) was a man of many talents. He not only painted, composed music, wrote poetry and prose, but also practiced photography. He explored all these forms of artistic expression during his youth, between 1895 and 1906 (with a one-year break for studies at the Leipzig Conservatory), while living in Warsaw. These years were crucial for the young artist’s creative development and the broadening of his worldview.

The exhibition A Visionary with a Kodak: The Photography of M. K. Čiurlionis presents a relatively little-known part of Čiurlionis’ artistic legacy – photography. The featured photographs were taken during the summer of 1905, while the artist was traveling in the Caucasus Mountains with friends. Čiurlionis compiled the photos into a small album and sent it to his brother Povilas, who was then living in the United States.

The exhibition at the Ossoliński National Institute in Wrocław will be accompanied by a series of events presenting Čiurlionis’ work: on April 30, 2025, curator Prof. Rasa Žukienė will lead a guided tour of the exhibition, followed by a lecture on Čiurlionis’ music by musicologist Dr. Paweł Siechowicz. On May 4, 2025, there will be a screening of the virtual reality film The Trail of Angels.
