When you take a closer look at M. K. Čiurlionis’ painting Summer Sonata. Allegro, an entire archipelago seems to emerge before your eyes. At the foot of nearby mountains, altars of art burn brightly, while hanging bridges connect the peaks, embroidered with the initials SKSKSK – a romantic code of his beloved's name. Some of the islands remain undiscovered, but the passing sailboats whisper: they will be found.

This “sonata” was painted by the artist shortly after returning to Druskininkai from Vilnius, where, for more than half a year, he had actively engaged in public life and began forming a delicate thread of friendship with “the Hope contributor”, as he playfully called Sofija Kymantaitė.

The lecture's author, who developed the texts for the mobile app “Čiurlionis’ Vilnius” and has led tours following the couple’s footsteps across Lithuania, will guide the audience to some of these still undiscovered islands.

This event is part of the lecture series accompanying the exhibition “Čiurlionis and His Contemporaries in the First Lithuanian Art Exhibition.”
