Contemporaries and later researchers have observed a kinship between the works and artistic worlds of M. K. Čiurlionis and Vydūnas.

This creative kinship is particularly evident in the sea imagery employed by both artists (Čiurlionis’ prose poem “The Sea”, symphonic poem “The Sea”, paintings such as “Sea Sonata”, “Andante”, etc.; Vydūnas’ “Bells of the Sea”, “Eternal Fire”, and others), especially in their interpretations of the legend of Jūratė and Kastytis (the joint idea of Sofija and Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis to create an opera titled “Jūratė”, Čiurlionis’ letters on the subject of the opera, and Vydūnas’ libretto for the opera “Jūraitė”).

A kind of dialogue emerges between Čiurlionis’ letters and Vydūnas’ libretto, depicting the love between a mortal and a goddess, the gods’ reaction to it, and a parallel with the ancient myth of Prometheus.

To support the argument of this artistic kinship, Čiurlionis’ literary writings, letters, musical and visual works, as well as Vydūnas’ plays and his texts on Čiurlionis’ art, are analyzed.

This lecture is part of the series accompanying the exhibition “Čiurlionis and His Contemporaries in the First Lithuanian Art Exhibition.” The subtheme of the series is “Čiurlionis and His Contemporaries from an Unexpected Angle.”
